During the WWII era in which the film was released, it was heralded for its intellectual use of Freudian theories to solve a murder. In retrospect, however, the film reveals psychoanalytic ideas that are simplistic and obsolete to the point of becoming comical. In spite of this, Hitchcock's tremendous ability to create suspense remains a timeless one and the film's thriller elements, combined with a series of outstanding visuals, bring Spellbound within a notch of the director's best works. The psychological elements allowed Hitchcock to be creative visually and he went to the best, hiring artist Salvador Dali to design a series of incredibly eerie dream sequences. Sadly, only a few of Dali's wonderful creations made the final cut while the others were either lost or destroyed. Hitchcock often spoke of one particularly fantastic sequence in which a statue cracked and fell apart, revealing star Ingrid Bergman beneath it. The climactic suicide scene in which the villain, having been revealed, decides to kill himself is another example of Hitchcock's willingness to experiment. Seen from the killer's perspective, the scene shows him turning the gun on himself and firing it right into the camera. The explosion appears in red and was hand-tinted onto the black-and-white image. Gregory Peck is a strong male lead playing the protagonist whose disturbed mind holds the key to the entire mystery, but Bergman steals the show as his love-struck shrink, a woman...Spellbound

This four-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, and Doctor Zhivago--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the bonus second discs of the movies--or, in the case of the deluxe version of Gone with the Wind, the third and fourth discs (the movie of Zhivago is still on a two-sided "flipper" disc)--so if you're a documentary junky or if you simply have to see the Casablanca TV show, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the movie discs of those sets, and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. Rawhide's second season keeps "rollin', rollin', rollin'" and fans of one of TV's greatest Western series will not be disapprovin' of these remaining 16 episodes. A pre-spaghetti Western Clint Eastwood at his longest and leanest, and that classic theme song that Jake and Elwood popularized for a new generation who may have never seen an episode, may rope in buyers for this four-disc set. But nearly 50 years later, Rawhide is as timeless as those majestic landscapes (grandly filmed on location) trail boss Gil Favor (Eric Fleming) and his drovers rode across each week. What makes Rawhide so compelling are its human dramas. As a philosophical Favor notes in one episode, "The expected never seems to happen. The surprises are always poppin' up."

Coming to the aid of a runaway spinster, running afoul of a band of gypsies, or being forced to accompany a wagonload of stolen nitroglycerin provide much more excitement than stampeding cattle. Eastwood, as Favor's protg, Rowdy Yates, gives Rawhide some "before they were stars" cachet. But this is an ensemble drama in which colorful and memorable characters abound, including Paul Brinegar's grizzled and prideful cook, Wishbone, James Murdock as the simple-minded Mushie, and Sheb Wooley as compassionate scout Pete Nolan. Veteran and greenhorn character actors put their own brands on individual episodes. Frances "Aunt Bea" Bavier turns up in "Incident of the Dust Flower." Warren Oates portrays a gypsy in "Incident of the Dancing Death." Cloris Leachman is an unhappy trading post proprietor's wife in "Incident of the Arana Sacar." And, in "Incident of the Stargazer," who would have thought folksy Buddy Ebsen, clad in a leather jacket, could take part in a Gaslight-scheme to defraud an unfortunate woman? But some of the best episodes in this set revolve around the drovers themselves. In "Incident of the Tinker's Dam," it seems that Wishbone's twin brother is not the paragon his brother steadfastly believes. In "Incident of the Sharpshooter," Rowdy is framed for murder by an outlaw posing as his lawyer. Rawhide galloped into the top ten in its second season. These episodes gloriously recapture a bygone era when Westerns ruled prime time. --Donald Liebenson

A masterpiece of filmmaking artifice and mood-setting atmosphere, Kwaidan consists of four ghost stories adapted from the fiction of Greek-born Lafcadio Hearn (a.k.a. Yakumo Koizumi, 1850-1904), who assimilated into Japanese culture so thoroughly that his writings reveal no evidence of Western influence. So it is that these four cinematic interpretations--perhaps more accurately described as tales of spectral visitation--are sublimely Japanese in tone and texture, created entirely in a studio with frequently stunning results. There are painterly images here that remain the most beautiful and haunting in all of Japanese cinema, presented with the purity of silent film, sparsely accompanied by post-synchronized sounds and music (by Toru Takemitsu) that enhance the otherworldly effect of director Masaki Kobayashi's meticulous imagery. When viewed in a receptive frame of mind, Kwaidan can be intensely hypnotic.

Each of the four stories find their protagonists confronted by spirits that compel them to (respectively) make amends for past mistakes, maintain vows of silence, satisfy the yearnings of the undead, or capture phantoms that remain frightfully elusive. As each tale progresses, their supernatural elements grow increasingly intense and distant from the confines of reality. With careful use of glorious color and wide-screen composition, Kwaidan exists in a netherworld that is both real and imagined, its characters never quite sure they can trust what they've seen and heard.
