nel 1866 benjamin trane, un colonnello sudista, si trasferisce in messico in cerca di fortuna. li', mentre il popolo si sta sollevando contro l'imperatore austriaco massimiliano, conosce joe erin, un avventuriero senza scrupoli che gli offre la sua amicizia e gli propone di fare affari insieme. cosi', quando il marchese de laborde're offre loro di entrare al servizio dell'imperatore, i due non esitano ad accettare l'offerta. a citta' del messico benjamin e joe incontrano la bellissima marchesa marie duvarre e scoprono, con piacere, di doverla scortare fino a vera cruz. durante il viaggio la marchesa rivela che, nascosto nella sua carrozza, c'e' un vero tesoro e propone di rubarlo per poi spartirlo. anche il marchese de laborde're, pero', ha messo gli occhi sul tesoro ed ha un piano per impossessarsene e rapire la marchesa. il convoglio sfugge a un'imboscata dei ribelli ma benjamin e joe vengono raggiunti da una ragazza messicana, nina, che confida che il tesoro che stanno trasportando appartiene al popolo messicano e chiede di passare dalla parte dei rivoluzionari. giunti a vera cruz, scoppia la battaglia ed erin pensa di approfittarne per rubare l'oro. benjamin, pero', ha ancora un briciolo di onesta' e, per fermare l'amico, lo uccide. alla fine benjamin perdera' un amico ma avra' come ricompensa l'amore di nina.
